Macrocosm

The “Norris Macrocosm” is a complex entity regarded as a complete system. It's six principles work together to support each other’s development, together creating a new future that is equitable and powerfully serves every learner. The principles are interconnected and must be considered together to achieve sustainability and scalability. As the system matures, more elements and practices evolve further solidifying the learner centric culture.

The Norris School District Macrocosm (Macrocosm Overview) distinguishes a learner centric approach to developing agency and leadership at all levels. It's six core principles are considered an essential part of our learner-centered ecosystem. The principles of the Norris Macrocosm include:

  • Learner Profile

  • Plans and Pathways

  • Competency Based Framework

  • Learning Network

  • Learner Centered Supports

  • Operating Structures

Understanding the Macrocosm

The Norris Macrocosm is a complete system of interconnected Principles Whose Elements and Practices that develop to empower the structure as a whole.

  • Principles  are essential understandings or the foundation from which all practices are anchored.

  • Elements are the essential part of the model that build the framework of the Macrocosm.  Elements represent a category of practices essential to develop.

  • Practices are the application of ideas or procedures that bring life to each element within the context of each unique environment.

Practices are developed using a multi-step design process with multiple levels of input as an iteration engine. By providing opportunities to design (OTD), learn (OTL, respond (OTR), and practice (OTP) supported with coaching the organization is able to move the implementation of promising practices to responsive enduring practices that are internalized and define the fiber and culture of the organization.

Each practice is mutually dependent on other practices within the ecosystem.  Rather than planning for and implementing a single innovative practice, Norris recognizes the interconnectedness of each practice and develops the practices in unison harnessing the power of collective efforts.

Macrocosm Principles

The six principles in the Macrocosm define the necessary foundations that all learner-centered environments must consider. The core principles of our Norris Macrocosm include:
